Grant-Funded Filmmaking
Create a funded short and learn the basics of video production

Instructor: Alec Asten

When you're looking to fund your filmmaking, don't forget about grants. Many public and non-profit initiatives exist to further a cause or champion a message. In this course, ten students will fulfill an existing grant to create a short film of their own design, from start to finish, with an experienced instructor to guide the way.

Our current mission is fully funded by a grant from the RI Department of Transportation. Each class will create one in a series of short films that aim to decrease drunk driving in 18-35 year old males. For each of several sessions, this grant provides full tuition reimbursement to ten students who complete the course, plus a production budget and a screening at the 2011 SENE Film Festival and a special screening event in September.

Students will also be featured in a co-documentary highlighting the mission-oriented impact of their filmmaking experience, which will be presented alongside the student shorts.

Each student will receive a dvd copy of the finished product and a certificate of completion.

We’re excited to announce the instructor for the next session will be award-winning video producer Alec Asten, founder of SECT, former manger of the Rockport, Maine Post Production Department for the International Film & Television Workshops. He has taught courses at as an AVID Certified Instructor, and spent his winters directing and editing a variety of corporate projects and recruitment videos in New York and Washington DC. In 1995, he moved to Mystic, Connecticut and became a staff director / editor at Sonalysts Studios Inc. where he worked on music videos, corporate projects, government media, and a wide assortment of broadcast documentaries for NBC, ESPN, The Discovery Channel, and The History Channel.

In January of 2007, Alec founded Firesite Films LLC, where his goal is to produce quality crafted films that not only entertain family audiences, but inspire them to research historic events. In his spare time he teaches various aspects of film production at several colleges including Mitchell College, Connecticut College, and the Connecticut School of Broadcasting.
