Open Casting Call May 8 in Cranston, RI

I am the RI based filmmaker behind Lumberjacking which premiered in November at the Park Cinema in Cranston. I am currently working on my latest film, Until Sprague Do We Part, a feature length comedy about two guys who become ghost hunters in order to hang out with their deceased best friend one last time.

We’re hosting a open casting call/audition on May 8th at the Sprague Mansion in Cranston, looking to cast all major roles in the film. We are looking for the most talented, professional and entertaining people possible. Production is currently scheduled for late June and will be mostly based in Cranston.

Thank you for being a continued supporter and friend of IFP. I am asking for your help in finding filmmakers to participate in IFP’s Independent Film Week Project Forum.

Independent Film Week is the oldest and largest forum in the U.S. for the discovery of new projects in development and new voices on the independent film scene. The Project Forum is a meetings-driven forum connecting filmmakers who have new narrative and documentary projects with key industry executives interested in identifying projects with which to become involved at the financing or distribution stage.

It is qualitatively and quantitatively the best opportunity for an independent filmmaker to connect with industry professionals - including producers, funders, distributors, broadcasters, sales agents and festival programmers. The Project Forum also furthers filmmaker and industry interaction with opportunities for networking at social events throughout the week.

(Recent projects have included: Emily Abt’s Toe to Toe, Courtney Hunt’s Frozen River, Rodney Evans’ Brother to Brother, Nicole Kassell’s The Woodsman, : Laura Poitras’ The Oath, Scott Hamilton Kennedy's The Garden, Rick Goldsmith and Judith Ehrlich’s The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers, Aron Gaudet’s The Way We Get By, Kimberly Reed’s Prodigal Sons, and many more).

We are reaching out to organizations and individuals who we feel would have a constituency well-suited to this program. We would love it if you could get the word out to your community to encourage them to apply to the Project Forum. This can be done either through the following tools: Newsletter or list-serve mention; Dedicated email blast; Blog promotion; or article written.

The 989 Project Is Seeking Interns

The 989 Project a film and video production company located just outside of Providence, RI seeking interns for the late May-late August 2010 session. You will be working in a busy office environment with several chances to go out on sets and be a part of various projects. It is important to also mention that a detailed knowledge of all aspects of film is not necessary. Whether creative, organized, business savvy, or all three, we are looking for people who want to learn and get involved.

Currently, we are seeking interns in four specific areas:

1) Editing- must have knowledge of Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere

2) Marketing/Promotion- knowledge of social networking sites (facebook, myspace, twitter, etc.)

3) Design- knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator

4) Business- must have great interpersonal skills and a willingness to help out with general duties in the office

5) Visual Effects - Basic knowledge of After Effects or Motion

There is a minimum requirement of two days a week, and course credit can be earned depending on commitment

Distinguished University Professor Reports $56.7 Million In Credits Results In $465.5 Million for Rhode Island's Economy and 4,184 New FTE Jobs

RHODE ISLAND~-With the Ocean State's high unemployment rate and elected officials searching for ways to improve Rhode Island's economy, the Motion Picture Production Tax Credit attracts thousands of high paying jobs, supports small businesses, and is crucial to the state's economy, according to a new, comprehensive study from Dr. Edward M. Mazze, Distinguished University Professor of Business Administration, The University of Rhode Island, titled, The Economic Impact of the Motion Picture Production Tax Credit on the Rhode Island Economy for the years 2005-2009.

The state and local economic benefits brought by hosting a major motion picture or television production are dynamic, and the total economic activity in Rhode Island that resulted from the $56.7 million tax credits from the period of 2005 through 2009 was $465.51 million dollars. The tax credit was responsible for creating and supporting 4,184 new FTE jobs. This does not include over 10,000 background extras used in the film and television productions.

"The Motion Picture Tax Credit was, and is, critical to the film and television production industry in Rhode Island, and vital to the state's economy. For every $1 dollar invested in the tax credit, over $8 of economic activity resulted. The economic benefits of the tax credit far outweigh the state's investment in the program," said Dr. Edward M. Mazze.

"The Rhode Island Film Collaborative was excited to sponsor a study by such an esteemed expert in the field of business as Dr. Mazze. His thorough examination offers crucial insight into the value of filmmaking to our community and to our local economy", said Mark Fogarty, RIFC President.

"Dr. Mazze's report on the economic impact of the tax credit on Rhode Island confirms what IATSE Local 481 has seen since the credit's inception in 2005: the creation of thousands of new jobs in the state", said Chris 0' Donnell, Business Manager, IATSE Local 481, "Local 481 membership in Rhode Island since 2005 has increased 350%. These are well paying jobs which typically provide health insurance and retirement benefits."

Dr. Mazze also indicated other positive impacts of the film tax credit that were not easily quantifiable:
- support of Rhode Island's cultural and historic sites
- formation of new businesses to support film and television production companies
- support of the state's creative sector
- local internship opportunities for students
- out-of-state students enrolling in film and television courses at Rhode Island's colleges and universities
- reduces the loss of skilled workers to other states
- support of other employment sectors such as leisure and hospitality, business and professional services, construction and education
- tourism from out-of-state visitors
- support of local film festivals
- support of charities, and
- global publicity for the state
"For years, we have received an overwhelming amount of correspondence with anecdotal evidence supporting the Motion Picture Incentive Program. Many citizens, small businesses, officials from cities and towns, tourism experts, college and university educators, community organizers, and charitable organizations have all shared the importance of this program and its positive influence on their lives. Dr. Mazze's study now mathematically proves it.

Through hard data and solid facts, his research clearly measures the total impact of the tax credit on Rhode Island's economy," said Steven Feinberg, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Film & TV Office. "We have a unique state due to our small size and diversity of locations as well as a strong talent pool and crew base. Filmmaking is a rapid growing industry. It has tremendous positive benefits--both artistic and economic--and it must be recognized as one of the most promising, vital lanes to Rhode Island's road for future economic success."

RI Premiere of Law & Disorder is Being Moved

Due to an overwhelming demand for tickets, the May 3rd benefit for the Tomorrow Fund, the Rhode Island premiere of the award winning film Law & Disorder, is being moved to Veteran's Memorial Auditorium.

There will be lots of excitement, flashbulbs, spotlights and stretch limousines at the Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium (VMA) Monday May 3, 2010 at 6:00 PM. That’s when local celebrities and hundreds of moviegoers will begin to arrive for the Rhode Island Premiere of Law & Disorder, the 2009 Pare Lorentz International Film Festival winner for “Best Feature Film.” Showtime is 7:30 PM and a portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to the Tomorrow Fund.

2010 Roving Eye Film Festival to be Held at Roger Williams University

BRISTOL, RI (04/20/2010)(readMedia)-- FLICKERS: Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) and Roger Williams University (RWU) are presenting the fifth annual Roving Eye Film Festival from April 22 to April 25. The event aims to celebrate cinematic art and artists from around the world and to evoke discussions on topics of global and local importance.

A total of 40 films will be screened during the festival, 25 of which were produced outside of the United States. Roving Eye screenings are free of charge and open to the public. The Roger Williams University Bristol campus will host nearly all screenings, with the exception of one community film screening taking place at the Barrington Public Library on Friday, April 23.

Carter Thor Studio-Boston is now in residence at the Center for Digital Imaging Arts at Boston University. CDIA at BU invited the Studio to be an in-house acting resource for the Film School. Students are invited to observe the acting process and have the option to shoot selected scenes on location thereby gaining valuable experience working with a pool of superbly trained actors. Studio members will have the opportunity to work closely with student filmmakers and create their own original projects using CDIA's impressive production resources. This new collaboration is an exciting creative moment for Carter Thor-Boston and will allow further sharpening of storytelling skills.

Black Box Theatre to Stage “The Cider House Rules”

Set in rural Maine in the first half of the 20th century and spanning decades, what begins as the story of a young boy born in an orphanage matures into a coming of age tale fraught with tension and ultimately explores the meaning of family, love, duty and sacrifice.

Homer Wells is an orphan who is rejected by a series of foster families and finds himself boomeranging back to the orphanage which eventually becomes his home.
The boy is taken under the reluctant wing of St. Cloud’s orphanage and hospital founder and director, Dr. Wilbur Larch, who generally avoids developing bonds with the children of the orphanage with the hopes of easing their transition into foster homes, but as Homer gradually becomes known as “the boy who belongs to St. Cloud’s”, Dr. Larch trains him as a physician’s assistant and becomes a father figure in the boy’s life, eventually training him as an obstetrician. When Homer learns of Dr. Larch’s secret illegal abortions, he struggles with the moral questions this raises. Dr. Larch sees offering these abortions as his only option, as his patients would otherwise be subjected to the horrors of back-alley operations.

“The play raises more questions than it gives answers, but that is precisely why I wanted to produce it,” says Rich Morra, Artistic Director of the Black Box Theatre.
Also central to the story is Homer’s mutual and complicated attraction to Candy, the girlfriend of Homer’s close friend Wally, which results in a long-running affair that fuses as much romance into the plot as it does tension.
With a story spanning eight decades that tracks Homer Wells’ life, love and soul-searching journey, the play is composed of five acts, and is broken into two parts, Part I: Here in St. Cloud’s and Part II: In Other Parts of the World, in which Homer is ultimately faced with the question of returning to the orphanage and step into the shoes of the ailing Dr. Larch.

Cider House Rules, Part I: Here in St. Cloud’s will be performed May 5, 6, 8, 9 and the 19 and 21. Part II: In Other Parts of the World will be performed May 13-16 and 22-23. Evening performances are at 7pm, and Sunday matinees are at 2 or 4pm. All performances will take place in the Black Box Theatre at Artists’ Exchange. M.E.S. productions is seeking help for an upcoming short film called "His Take On Her".

This is a relatively small film so some of these roles may overlap.

His Take On Her is a dark romantic comedy that will be approximately 30 minutes finished.

Logline - Conflict arises when an aspiring but clueless film director romances a seemingly suicidal poet / actress.

Synopsis - Steven Bichelle is a man who's romances always seem to end in disaster. A talented filmmaker, he is trying to put together his first feature length project with a couple of buddies. Enter Elena Samson a beautiful poet and an aspiring actress. They fall in love but there are complications. Elena appears to be suicidal and one of Steve's buddies is convinced that it's only a matter of short time before she offs herself. To compound matters Elena wants to be in Steve's film but he is very cool to the idea. Can Steve save her, his romance, and his film or will disaster strike?

EMMY NOMINATION FOR ‘ON THE LAKE'

–– Eagle Peak Media’s first feature release, ON THE LAKE: Life and Love in a Distant Place, has been nominated for Best Documentary in the 33rd annual Boston/New England Emmy competition, sponsored by the New England chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

The chapter released its nominations Tuesday night. Winners will be announced at a ceremony May 22 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.

“We are honored to be considered for this award, and we thank the Academy’s independent judges,” said writer/producer G. Wayne Miller. “It’s a testament to the dedication and hard work of our entire crew.”

Said director David Bettencourt: “Independent filmmaking can be a challenge, but a nomination like this makes it all worthwhile. This recognizes the creative vision that is the heart of our work.”

BRISTOL, R.I. –– This year’s Roving Eye documentary film festival will feature an early look at BEHIND THE HEDGEROW: Eileen Slocum and the Meaning of Newport Society, the first-ever feature-length movie about the secret world of old-money Newport that will premiere at the 2010 Rhode Island International Film Festival.

Writer/producer G. Wayne Miller and director David Bettencourt will be on hand April 25 at Roger Williams University to screen selections from the film and join RWU professor Edward Delaney to talk about the making of HEDGEROW and participate in a more general discussion, “The Art of Creative Storytelling.”

Part history, part contemporary look, HEDGEROW is told through the focus of Eileen Gillespie Slocum, Newport’s last grand dame, who died in the summer of 2008. Slocum’s family has granted the filmmakers exclusive access to her archives and private Bellevue Avenue estate, where much of the film was shot over the last year.
The Roving Eye event will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, at Roger Williams’ Global Heritage Hall 01. It is free and open to the public.

HEDGEROW, scheduled for PBS broadcast, is now in post-production. A second advance look and discussion will be staged in Newport on Wednesday, April 28. This session is by invitation only. Midway Pictures Announces Premiere of Documentary Film "It's a Bash!"

PROVIDENCE, RI -- Midway Pictures, producers of the award-winning documentaries "You Must Be This Tall: The Story of Rocky Point Park" and "On the Lake: Life and Love in a Distant Place", announces the premiere of the documentary film "It's a Bash!" on April 30, 2010 at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel in Providence, RI

The new documentary film is an in-depth look at seminal Rhode Island punk rock band Neutral Nation, and, by extension, of the Providence music scene. Neutral Nation were an active band in the music scene throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, releasing records, touring, and playing with other acts such as the Ramones, the Dead Milkmen and the Red Hot Chili Peppers before deciding to break up in 1993. The band has since played a series of well-attended and regarded reunion shows in the intervening years. The film explores the reasons behind the band's popularity in Rhode Island, their break-up, and why they subsequently continued to play music together.

"It's a Bash! isn't just about one band.", said David Bettencourt, the film's director. "It also takes a look at the many great people that helped to build a live music scene here in Providence. It's a film about being in a band."

The screening will be followed by a rare Neutral Nation live performance. "When we started the band the three goals were free beer, to meet girls, and be on the cover of The Attleboro Sun Chronicle weekender addition. Mission accomplished, and then some!", said Mike Yarworth, Neutral Nation's vocalist.

Our story so far:

There will be lots of excitement, flashbulbs, spotlights and stretch limousines at the Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium (VMA) Monday May 3, 2010 at 6:00 PM. That’s when local celebrities and hundreds of moviegoers will begin to arrive for the Rhode Island Premiere of Law & Disorder, the 2009 Pare Lorentz International Film Festival winner for “Best Feature Film.” Showtime is 7:30 PM and a portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to the Tomorrow Fund.

Johnston, Rhode Island’s Bobby Vigeant stars in this 90 minute comedy produced by Beaver Dam Productions, as John Isaac, the former Director of a Washington DC law firm whose irreverent spirit is denied entrance into Heaven and forced to live out eternity in his former place of employment. Vigeant, commuted to Washington for four months during production of the film. Providence, RI (March 31, 2010) --- The 1st Annual New England Festival of Ibero-American Cinema (NEFIAC) will be held Saturday September 18, 2010 through Saturday September 25, 2010 in Providence, RI. NEFIAC will be screening films at the Avon Cinema, the Cable Car Cinema, as well as various local University locations. Screenings in other cities in the area will include Cambridge, MA (Harvard Film Archives), New Haven, CT (Yale University), and Williamsburg, VA (William & Mary College).

The New England Ibero-American Film Festival (NEFIAC) is a ground breaking competitive film festival dedicated to the promotion of the Hispanic and Portuguese cultures through the exhibition and discussion of feature films, documentaries, shorts and animations, as well as through other artistic manifestations, produced in or about Latin America, Spain and Portugal.NEFIAC's mission is to link the rich academic knowledge available in the New England region to the community at large.

NEFIAC's Executive Director, José Torrealba, a filmmaker himself, has extensive experience in film festival organization (The Providence Latin American Film Festival, Montreal World Film Festival, CineBRAZIL at Brown), as well as in community relations. Under his leadership and as the Outreach Coordinator at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Brown University, NEFIAC will be able to accomplish its principal educational goals and purposes:

· To encourage the appreciation and production of Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese cinema, both as an art form and as a medium of information and education, by means of showing and discussing films, giving lectures and creating debates on issues presented by specific films.

A jury formed of industry professionals and academics will be selecting the winners of the cash awards offered under the different categories: Emerging Directors, Best Documentary film, Best Short and even a prize for Audience Award. Everyone at some time or another has had an idea and said, "That would make a good movie!" This class is for anyone who dreams of making that dream a reality. The class will teach students how to make their idea marketable before they even write a word, craft compelling characters and dialogue, follow proper screenplay format, and make use of the advantages of a visual medium when crafting their story. The students will craft the Pitch-perfect one-minute pitch, and learn all the routes to get their script produced including the studio system, the indie market, and producing it themselves.

Jenn Dlugos is an award-winning screenwriter, winning awards for six screenplays (two shorts, four features) including the Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope Competition, the Rhode Island International Film Festival, the Twin Rivers Media Festival, The Vine Entertainment Film Festival, the Kids First! film festival, the Feel Good Film Festival, The Beverly Hills Film Festival and the NYCMIDNIGHT Screenwriting Challenge. She was the screenwriter for the short film The Pitch for the 2007 Providence 48 Hour Film Project. The film won four awards, including 2nd Runner-up for Best of Providence, Audience Favorite and Best Twist Ending.

Her screenplay The Last Promise of Giles Corey is contracted by Firesite Films for their Historic Haunts & Legends of America series, and she is the screenwriter for Big Hope Films, a charity which helps disabled children realize their dream of making a film. Most recently, a producer in Seattle acquired the rights to her screenplay Followed, and she is making her documentary directing debut with a humorous documentary There She Is, Mrs. Massachusetts, which finished filming in Spring of 2009.

Her edgy humor won her the Shock Your Mama! humor writing competition, and she was recently published by Travelers' Tales in the book, Whose Panties Are These? and Chicken Soup for the Soul. In 2000, she published her first book, How to Survive a Small Town Without Being Trampled by a Cow.
