If you’re connected to the film industry, you’re probably aware of the controversy around the Film Tax Credit in the last few years.

The credit served to draw a number of larger budget flims and TV series to Rhode Island in previous years. Then our state government put a cap on the program, deterring large productions (they never knew whether credits would remain, by the time they shot). In the meantime, Mass and CT had started duplicating the success of RI’s program, so many productions moved to those states.

The consequence has been a dramatic decrease in the amount of film-related work in Rhode Island. Now, the governor has proposed removing it entirely, which will effectively end any mid- or large- budget filmmaking in Rhode Island. We have already seen a number of independent projects shift to Massachusetts and CT because of the tax situation.

If you’re getting this email, you likely care enough about the film community and industry to not want this to happen. HELP the tax credit by sending a clear, personal message to your representatives in State government.

RIPRO, the local organization of professional film and video organizations, has launched a tool that allows film supporters to quickly and easily send this message.

All you have to do is enter your information – an email supporting the tax credit will automatically be sent to your representatives, congressmen and elected officials who can make a difference on this issue. Constituents rarely do this, so when they take the time to do it in large numbers, our representatives DO take notice!! We just need to act together.

This year for Ahtspot’s 5th Annual Open Call, we are taking it to a whole new level, 3 Cities!!! The Ahtspot Open Call will be in Boston at Improv Boston’s Main Stage Theater on April 6th, Tazza Café in Providence, RI on June 21st and in Connecticut (Location TBD) as part of the Film Industry Mixer on August 28th.

So first up on Tuesday, April 6th 2009 at 7:00pm at Improv Boston’s Main Stage Theater (40 Prospect St. in Central Square, Cambridge, MA), Ahtspot.com presents the 5th Annual Ahtspot Open Call! This event is one of the events leading up to Boston’s 48 Hour Film Project. This is an event for actors, filmmakers and theater professionals like no other. The Ahtspot Open Call is an open forum audition show where talented actors can audition for the crowd of directors, producers and even other actors. Each actor gets no more than two minutes on stage, and if they go over their time they are hosed down with silly string to let them know it is time to go. Directors, producers and other theater and film professionals—this is a free event to check out the local New England pool of talent. From 7 to 9pm you will be able to watch actors audition for the audience, then after the show stick around and approach your favorite talent. Order a drink, relax, take notes and enjoy the show!

This event is run to help promote the 48 Hour Film Project Boston 2010! This is a contest where filmmakers are challenged to make a complete short film in just 48 hours. Teams are invited and welcome to the event to cast for their movies, meet other teams, collect additional crew and network with other film and theater professionals. Actors, sign up begins at 6:00pm and there can be a line. Actors will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. Ahtspot.com clients will have the ability to pre-register online. We are seeking both male and female actors age 18-24 to act in a short film. This film is being produced as a part of the senior experience program and Bishop Hendricken High School.

It will be directed by two seniors from the school working with a local production company. Acting experience is not required but is encouraged. We will be shooting 2-3 nonconsecutive days over 2-3 weeks.

Kid Filmmakers Presents Pirate Movie Workshop at SENE Film Festival

NEWPORT, RI — Avast, ye Sprogs! D' ye dream o' black flags, gold coins an' treasure isles? D' ye see yerself on th' silver screen in a no-budget pirate movie? Registration is now open for Screen Stealers, a three-hour film acting workshop for children, to be held at the Pawtucket YMCA at 20 Summer Street in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on Sunday, April 11 at 2PM.
Presented by Kid Filmmakers, Screen Stealers is a featured children's event of the Southeast New England Film, Music and Arts Festival. Workshop registrants will learn how to act and talk like a pirate from a pirate re-enactor, while producing a funny pirate movie for Kid Filmmakers' own Flying Popcorn TV channel on YouTube. Screen Stealers is open to children, ages 8-15. Registration is $10.00 per child; a group discount is available at $40.00 per 5 children. All children under 10 years must be accompanied by an adult. Costumes are suggested but optional.

Main Street Independent Film Wakefield, Rhode Island

Call for Entries

Hera Gallery announces a Call for Entries for films and videos to be submitted to the Main Street Independent Film Festival organized by Historic Wakefield Village Downtown Merchants’ Association, Hera Gallery, South County Players/Children’s Theatre, Independent Newspapers, and South Kingstown Parks and Recreation. The festival will take place in historic Wakefield, Rhode Island. Screenings will take place at Church of the Ascension on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 9, 10 and 11, 2010.

Films and videos will be accepted in the following genres: Narrative/Open (ideal run-time of 30 minutes or under); Documentary (ideal run-time of 20 minutes or under); Experimental (ideal run-time of 15 minutes or under); Animation (ideal run-time of 15 minutes or under); News Segment (ideal run-time of 5 minutes or under); and Commercial/ PSA (ideal runtime of 1 minute or under).

Submissions should include: 1) a DVD copy of the film, 2) filmmaker’s contact information: name, address, phone number and email, 3) a short synopsis of the film, title, film length, and writer, director, producer, actor’s names, and 4) a biographical paragraph (or resume) including background and interest in film. Please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope for return of your materials if desired. Deadline for submissions is April 30, 2010.

The H.P. Lovecraft Tribute Servic

The H.P. Lovecraft Tribute Service will take place on Sunday, March 14, at the 1891 Ladd Observatory, frequented by H.P. Lovecraft in his boyhood years. Christian Henry Tobler, historian author of erudite and splendidly illustrated texts on German medieval combat, will preside as our Master of Ceremonies.

In the years since the first such occasion held on March 15, 1987 the H.P. Lovecraft Tribute Service has become something of a Rhode Island tradition! Typically this annual event draws in excess of 130 persons. Gothic or vintage style attire is encouraged. After the proceedings at Ladd Observatory, all will be invited to gather at the gravesite of H.P. Lovecraft in Swan Point Cemetery, precisely two miles north from the performance setting.

H.P. Lovecraft was born on August 20, 1890 and died on March 15, 1937.

This Just in on the Massachusetts Film Tax Credits:

Dear filmmakers,

The Massachusetts Joint Committee on Revenue voted today, March 11 in a 10:30 a.m. executive session that House Bill 3854, filed by State Representative Steven D'Amico should be reported out of committee unfavorably with a vote of 7 to 1. This means that the Committee will issue a report recommending that the bill "ought not to pass" and will remain in the Clerk's Office. As a result, it is highly unlikely that it will reach the House or Senate. Thanks go out to all of our members who attended last week's Revenue hearing in strong support of the state's Film and TV Tax Credit. Your voice matters!

Congratulations to everyone that turned out in support of keeping the credits intact. Hopefully Rhode Island follows suit.

Embracing creative genius is not enough. In a world of morphing media, film director Michael Corrente beams a klieg light into the creative world of film production beyond the splice. Knowing the backroads of networking, promotion, and finance are a few, but immense, segments of bringing scripts to life.

Pawtucket born and raised, Michael Corrente has produced many films including "A Shot At Glory", "American Buffalo","Outside Providence", "Brooklyn Rules" and "Federal Hill". Producing more than 25 plays with Studio B, he has also written several including a semi-autobiographical one-act "Not For Nothin", that became the
screenplay for his breakout film in 1993, Federal Hill. Often compared to Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets, Federal Hill won the Audience Award in 1994 at France’s Deauville Film Festival and was eventually distributed by Trimark Pictures. Corrente, working as an independent film maker, has successfully navigated financial channels while proving his merit as both writer and director.

STARS ALIGN FOR "BODY OF EVIDENCE" TV PILOT

The Rhode Island Film & TV Office is pleased to announce that ABC studios has attached stellar talent to their new pilot being filmed entirely in Rhode Island.

Acclaimed actress DANA DELANY ("China Beach", "Tombstone", "Desperate Housewives") has been cast to play Megan Hunt, a tenacious medical examiner whose background as a neurosurgeon gives her a refreshing crime solving perspective that puts her at odds with nearly everyone.

JERI RYAN, popular actress of "Star Trek Voyager" and "Shark", brings her power to this special pilot. She will portray the chief medical examiner and boss to the main character Megan Hunt.

Steven Feinberg, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Film & TV Office said, "We congratulate ABC for selecting such amazing talent to what is already an excellent project. An Amazing Show of Support!

A Message from Chuck Slavin:

It gives me great pleasure to have seen two packed state houses in support of film. The first hearing that I attended was in Rhode Island. The numbers of supporters at the Rhode Island hearing many were left watching testimony in the halls of the state house on closed circuit TV. as the hearing room could only accommodate a small number. Director Michael Corrente, and Actor James woods, were brought in by the film commission; their testimony was passionate, factual, convincing, and made for a very compelling argument. The Rhode Island Film Office did an excellent job of defending the Rhode Island Film Credit. Rhode Island Film Director Steven Feinberg really stood up for the Film Credit and showed with out a doubt why the Rhode Island Film Credit works! A tip of the hat to Steven for seizing the moment and defending film with his unwavering testimony! The Rhode Island Film Commision has set up another hearing for tomorrow with the Rhode Island Senate Finance Committee. The follow-up meeting to discuss the film proposal will be at 2 PM ON TUES. 3/09 IN ROOM 211 OF The Rhode Island State House!! This may be the last chance to plead our cases for film in Rhode Island.

In Mass through coordinated efforts by the MPC, SAG/Aftra Office, and IATSE; we were able to have a great rally which required a change of venue to the Gardner Auditorium to accommodate the great number of supporters of the Mass Film Industry. For those of you who do not know the Gardner Auditorium is the largest room in the Mass State House and we packed it!!! Opponents of the Film Tax Credit seemed to fire every bit of ammunition they had to rollback the mass film credit. Our size and magnitude we were able to battle back. The allies of the Mass Film Credit gave a great showing of facts and figures to combat House Bill 3854, but we lost a chance to capitalize on the momentum on the positive effects on the film industry in Massachusetts without the testimony of our film commissioner. Although he was in attendance we were all very surprised and disappointed that the top film leader did not come to our defense against one the most important piece of legislation that impacts jobs in the film community. This is another reason why there is a need for an official state agency as is a case in Rhode Island. Though it would appear that our efforts may have swayed the panel in Mass. in future hearings we will need the leadership of an official film office to defend the film industry and future jobs that impact our lives.

This is a war for these film credits in New England that crosses all state borders and professions, occupations and we must remain vigilant, but with knowledge, organization and dissemination of true facts we will succeed. There are many more battles ahead, but I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who showed up, testified, gave written testimony, rallied, and emailed their public officials on behalf of the film community. The New England Film Movement continues....

As many of you are aware, the Governor's recent budget proposes to completely eliminate the Rhode Island Motion Picture Tax Incentive program.

There will be a Senate Finance Committee Hearing to discuss this proposal at 2 PM ON TUES. 3/09/10 IN ROOM 211 OF THE STATE HOUSE. This will probably be the last opportunity to share your views.

If you feel the elimination of the Motion Picture Tax Incentive will have an impact on you, your business and/or family, you should attend this hearing to have your voice heard.

As many of you are aware, the Governor's recent budget proposes to completely eliminate the Rhode Island Motion Picture Tax Incentive program.

There will be a House Finance Committee Hearing to discuss this proposal at 1PM on WED. 2/24/10 in Room 35 of the State House.　This will probably be the only opportunity to share your views.

If you feel the elimination of the Motion Picture Tax Incentive will have an impact on you, your business and/or family, you should attend this hearing to have your voice heard.

From LDI CASTING: BODY OF EVIDENCE

NEW ABC TV PILOT TO FILM IN RI

A new television pilot, BODY OF EVIDENCE, is slated to start filming in various locations throughout our State in March 2010. Pre-production has begun.

"A procedural drama that centers on a brilliant and tenacious female Medical Examiner, Megan Hunt. Her background as a neurosurgeon gives her a unique and refreshing crime-solving perspective, one that often puts her at odds with just about everyone who crosses her path."

NOTE: This is an AFTRA project. Not SAG.

If you are non-union, you’re good to go. If you are AFTRA, be sure your membership is CURRENT and If you are only SAG… you are not AFTRA.

Last year we ran into more than a few miscommunications and I want to fix that before it starts. Once we get the OK, we’ll start contacting people regarding this work.
